Online Reputation Management (ORM) – A Special Type of Public Relations

While compared with Search Engine Optimization (SEO), Online Reputation Management (ORM) is relatively new to the marketing world and it can be dated back in 2007 in literature.

ORM is different from SEO that it does not focus only on boosting web presence. Instead, it combines the efforts of monitoring and steering how a company is presented in the online world and making sure that these presences are positive towards the image and goodwill of the company.

ORM is more important that SEO. If you don’t do anything on SEO your company will have a low share-of-voice in the online world, you will miss inbound traffic and business opportunities and that’s all. However, if you really don’t care about  ORM at all, negative and harmful opinions on the internet can potentially have vast impacts on your company’s reputation and business.

Different from SEO, ORM is always a “two-way” process which involve lots of dialogues, conversations and even negotiations. It’s also a blend of technology, analytics and public relations exercises.
